I watched the truck pull up to a high, razor wire fence, a guy stepping out and acknowledging Bruce before allowing the gate to open and let us in. We rumbled up to a massive gleaming silver warehouse that sported a CSIRO sign on the side.

“The government science agency acts as a front for us,” Bruce explained as we got out. “In return, we let them have a play with any cadavers we end up with. So, welcome to your new home for the foreseeable future.”

“Laila will need to go with them,” Hannah insisted as Bruce began to bristle. “They’re already bonded, and company policy is we don’t separate the bonded until it can be determined whether it will have an adverse effect on either party.”

“Fine,” he said, then slammed the truck door and tromped on over to the side door of the warehouse.

“We said we would overcome any challenge to be with you, Lay-la,” Vargan said. “And we will, together.”

“Together,” the other two agreed as we followed Bruce. I just wished I had their confidence.
